Rationale The Harry Potter universe is a wonderful fantasy world. Within it are a plethora of colourful characters -- some fleshed out and some not. With any tale, we have a tendency to "fill in the gaps" where the author is lacking in the details required to satisfy our own imagination. In the Harry Potter universe, there is none more mysterious than the infamous Severus Snape. The unsolved character has always drawn considerable attention and proffers the most allure (i.e. Boba Fett from the Star Wars universe). However, one can usually extrapolate reasonably, arriving at a fair conclusion of character depth and detail. There are many theories out there regarding Snape's nature and life's details. Unfortunately, much of it, as told in fan fics, contravenes the sensibilities of the original canon literature as woven by JK Rowling. This is not to say all of the far fetched musings and fantasy ruminations are unworthy of attention, but they do not have a place on this little website. This region of cyber space is devoted to Severely Severus Snape Fan Fic. That is: Snape is in character. Let's face it; if you have really read the books objectively (not as a hormonally challenged individual), Snape is not a nice man. He's not downright evil, and the Shrieking Shack incident notwithstanding, he's a pretty nasty piece of work at times. "Bastard" tends to sum it up simply and best. Certainly, he may have a conscience, a sliver of remorse and various other psychological torments as well as some positive attributes ("kind", does not spring to mind, however), but on the whole -- he's not what you'd bring home to meet the parents unless you were being rebellious. Snape is not bonking students. The only reason I address this point is because of the high percentage of such themed fic out there. The chances of Snape bonking a student (Harry, Hermione, Draco et al) are the same as Dumbledore deciding Voldemort was right all along; that Mudbloods and Muggles are best exterminated from the wizarding populace. Non student bonking (Remus, James, Minerva et al) is conceivable. Love is a possibility for the potions master, but it should have basis like any real love in the world. Snape is not a completely evil rotter. While Snape may not win any teaching awards, Dumbledore trusts Snape. Dumbledore is also capable of keeping Snape in line when he witnesses Snape getting out of hand. Dumbledore would not put the students, especially Harry, at risk if he perceived Snape as a danger. Snape did save Harry's life, even if it was debt repayment. Snape is not drastically reformed. The most devoted lover or friend is not about to be single handedly responsible for a sudden or drastic genuine reformation of Snape. Even with all the psychiatric care in the world, we rarely see evidence of that in our own world. However, that is not to say personality changes will not occur -- but it's doubtful the perfect loving relationship will spawn a Snape full of mirth and joy. Snape is not a family man. Marriage and children are likely not in Snape's cards. Again, this concept is usually the imaginings of a hormonally challenged mind. While there is little evidence to support he would not marry or have children, there's absolutely no indication he has a desire to do so. Marriage is conceivable in the right circumstances, but it's perhaps more likely he would settle into a permanent relationship without a wedding for some time. At the end of the day, it can be said: Snape is Snape. He is a character unto himself, likely to never deviate far from the image presented to us by JK Rowling. That is what this site is about.
